SUDBURY, Ont. — Police in Sudbury, Ont., say a man is facing 13 charges related to the theft of coins from laundry machines in the city.
They say they've received reports of 37 break-and-enter incidents in which laundry rooms of apartment buildings or housing complexes were broken into and laundry machine coin boxes were emptied.
Investigators say a man was arrested Thursday after a crowbar was used to break into an apartment building, but they say the suspect discovered that the laundry machines did not require coins.
They say he was detained by an off-duty provincial police officer after allegedly punching and swinging the crowbar at a building employee who confronted him.
A 39-year old man is charged with 11 counts of break and enter to commit theft and two counts of break and enter to commit mischief.
Police say he is charged in 13 of the break and enters in which an undetermined amount of money was taken and more than $30,000 worth of damage was caused to the buildings and machines.
